Pakistan Lead 1-0-(Pak vs Ind ODI series)

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's heroic unbeaten century under pressure went in vain as archrivals Pakistan held its nerve to clinch the first one-day international with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a low-scoring contest on Sunday.

India posted 227 for six after recovering from a precarious 29 for five one stage but that turned out to be insufficient for the Pakistanis who rode on Nasir Jamshed's unbeaten century to overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Dhoni played a captain's knock with an unbeaten 113, his 8th ODI century, to script a brilliant Indian recovery after left-arm pacer Junaid Khan (4/43) exploited the overcast conditions to rip through the top-order and leave the hosts gasping for breath within the first 10 overs.

Great Tony Pass away!

Former England captain Greig diesFormer England captain and prominent cricket pundit Tony Greig has died at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack at his Sydney home on Saturday.

"In sad news, beloved Tony Greig, former England cricket captain has passed away today at the age of 66," broadcaster Channel Nine, which employed Greig as a cricket commentator, said on Twitter.

"To his family and friends we pass on our best wishes."

Greig, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, was taken to a Sydney hospital but died at about 1:45 pm (0245 GMT).

"The staff of the emergency department worked on Mr Greig to no avail," a spokesman at St Vincent's hospital told local media.

South Africa-born Greig, who played 58 tests for England, made his test debut against Australia in Manchester in 1972 and amassed 3,599 runs for an average of 40.43 until his last match at the Oval against the same opponents in 1977.

An imposing figure standing at 1.98 metres tall (6ft-6in), Greig was also a successful bowler with 141 test wickets at an average of 32.20.

Greig was stripped of the captaincy for his role in recruiting players for late Australian businessman Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in the 1970s and his international career ended shortly after.

Greig, a long-time resident Down Under, became a summer fixture in Australian lounge-rooms as a cricket commentator for Packer's Channel Nine since 1979, having been promised a "job for life" by the media mogul, among a number of other roles in the media.

"Our family wants to extend our gratitude for the support and condolences we have received and would ask for privacy at this very sad time," his wife Vivian said in a statement.

Greig leaves behind two daughters and two sons.

Sharma and Akmal fined over Bengaluru incident

Sharma and Akmal fined over Bengaluru incidentIndia bowler Ishant Sharma and Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal have been fined after being found guilty of Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Code following an altercation between the two players in the opening Twenty20 International which Pakistan won by five wickets in Bengaluru on 25 December 2012.

Akmal was fined five per cent by Roshan Mahanama, of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, after he pleaded guilty to breaches of Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct of 'conduct contrary to the spirit of the game' in the 18th over of the Pakistan reply.

Sharma also pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the same charge.

However, Sharma appealed the penalty and a hearing was held. After reviewing the evidence and the video footage, Mr Mahanama re-confirmed his view that Sharma initiated this incident which was reported by all four umpires on-field S Ravi and C Shamsuddin, TV umpire VA Kulkarni and fourth official K Srinath. Therefore a penalty of 15 per cent of the match fee was imposed.

Mr Mahanama said: "This is clearly a high profile and high intensity series and the players on both sides have been reminded of their responsibility. Both players recognised their duty to set the right type of example through their on-field behaviour and they have accepted that they fell short of the level of conduct required.

"The game was played in the true spirit till this incident was initiated by Ishant, who is an experienced cricketer, which led to the umpires and his team mates having to intervene."

All Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player's match fee.

South Africa too strong for New Zealand in final T20

South Africa too strong for New Zealand in final T20A powerful batting display and disciplined bowling helped South Africa to a 33-run victory over New Zealand in the third and deciding T20 International at St.George's Park on Wednesday.

Opener Henry Davids top scored with 68 from 51 balls as the Proteas posted a formidable 179-6 after winning the toss and batting first.

Left arm spinner Aaron Phangiso and seamer Ryan McLaren then collected identical figures of 3-25 as the Black Caps subsided to a disappointing 146-9 in reply.

The home side were briefly in trouble at 26-2 until Davids was joined by Justin Ontong who belted 48 from 30 balls with three sixes and four during a third-wicket stand of 89 which laid the platform for a dynamic end to the innings.

David Miller struck four boundaries in 28 from 15 balls and Farhaan Behardien finished with an unbeaten 22 from just 11 deliveries.

Martin Guptill (24) and captain Brendon McCullum (25) briefly threatened to make a game of it but the run rate proved unmanageable and wickets fell steadily with the result in little doubt from the 10th over when the Black Caps slumped to 60-4.

The tourists now play a three-day match against provincial side Boland in Paarl from Dec. 28 in preparation for the first of two test matches starting in Cape Town on Jan. 2.

Bring it on! Jayawardena says of hostile MCG

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena has no illusions about the hostile reception awaiting his team at Melbourne Cricket Ground but insists it will only spur the tourists in the second test against Australia starting on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka do not have particularly fond memories of the MCG, where their spin great Muttiah Muralidaran was no-balled seven times when the islanders last played a test here in 1995.

The visitors have riled the Victorian fans this time by unofficially accusing local favourite Peter Siddle of ball-tampering in the first test in Hobart.

"We have been through a lot of hostile things in the past. 1995 was one and even after that," Jayawardena told a Christmas Day news conference on Tuesday.

"I don't think that fazes our team. It might give us something extra," added the visiting captain, who was expecting a decent Sri Lankan turnout in the match.

"You have to remember there will be a good partisan Sri Lankan crowd as well so that will be good. It might go against him (Siddle).

"We can't control what happens out there. All we can control is what happens in the middle."

Sri Lanka have not won a single test on Australian soil and Jayawardena wants to break that spell before relinquishing captaincy after the ongoing series.

"If we do that, it won't be for me personally but for the entire team and for the entire country it would be something good, and it would be for the next generation to look at."

Sri Lanka will make a late call on playing pacer Nuwan Kulasekara, who was hit in the rib while batting in the Hobart test which the visitors lost by 137 runs.

"We want to give him another chance to bowl today and see whether he's 100 percent and we'll make a call on that probably tomorrow morning," said Jayawardena.

Yuvraj shines as India beat England by 5 wickets

Yuvraj shines as India beat England by 5 wickets
Yuvraj Singh produced a brilliant all-round display as India finally brought about some cheer for their fans with a comfortable five-wicket victory over England in the first Twenty20 International on Thursday.

Yuvraj took three for 19 from his four overs to restrict England to a manageable 157 for six and then blasted 38 off 21 balls to set up an easy chase as the home team reached the target with 13 balls to spare.

After the humiliation in the Test series, Indian team saw a change in fortune in the shortest format to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

The second and final T20 International will be played on Saturday.

Asian giants India and Sri Lanka for Tri Nations in West Indies

The bumper season of international cricket in the Caribbean will reach a crescendo when the three biggest teams in Limited Overs cricket clash in the Caribbean in June and July next year in a seven match One Day International Tri Nation Series.

Reigning World T20 champions West Indies will host the two Asian giants - World 50 Over champions India and Sri Lanka - the losing finalists in both the ICC World Twenty20 Championship and Cricket World Cup.

Each team will play the other two teams twice with the matches scheduled for Sabina Park in Jamaica and Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad.

The Series will bowl off in Kingston ON June 28th with the Windies tackling India on June 28th. A total of three matches will be played at Sabina with four matches, including the final, to be staged at Queen's Park. The final will be played on July 11th, by the two teams with the most points after the six preliminary matches.

The Limited Overs portion of the Sri Lankan tour of the West Indies which was originally scheduled for April/May will now be played as part of the Tri Nation Series.

The Sri Lankan tour of the West Indies was rescheduled to allow players from both teams to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

As part of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP), Sri Lanka was originally scheduled to tour the Caribbean for two Tests, three ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals in 2013. The two Tests have been deferred and will be played at a later date in the FTP cycle.

In addition to India and Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Pakistan will also tour the Caribbean in 2013, making it the first time four international teams will visit the region in a calendar year (outside of a world tournament).

Siddle strikes to spark dramatic Australia win

Seamers Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc shared six late wickets to give Australia a dramatic 137-run victory over Sri Lanka in the last hour of the fifth and final day of the first test on Tuesday.

Siddle, who finished the match with figures of 9-104, and left-armer Starc, who took 5-63 in the second innings, caught fire in the final session to bowl the tourists out for 255 and give Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-test series.

Having been stymied in similar circumstances by a brilliant rearguard action from South Africa in Adelaide last month, Australia were desperate not to repeat the experience in Hobart.

It looked like it might be a case of deja vu at tea, however, when some resilient batting from the Sri Lankans and a couple of rain breaks frustrated the hosts for two sessions.

Siddle had already taken the key wickets of captain Mahela Jayawardene (19) and ICC Cricketer of the Year Kumar Sangakkara (63) around lunch but the tourists reached tea on 186 with six wickets still in hand.

In a sign of Australia's growing desperation, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade shed his pads and gloves to bowl the final over before the break and claimed a maiden in his first spell in senior cricket.

Sri Lanka, set a victory target of 393, could still conceivably have won the match but a paltry return of 42 runs in the second session clearly indicated they were batting for a draw rather than a first win in Australia.

The Australian bowling unit, a man down after local quick Ben Hilfenhaus suffered a side strain, never gave up, even if Siddle looked like the only man who might break through for much of the day.

The 28-year-old struck again on the first ball of his second over after tea to dismiss obdurate all-rounder Angelo Mathews, caught behind by Wade for 19.

With the rain staying away, Siddle then removed the last of the Sri Lankan top order with a sizzling delivery which trapped Thilan Samaraweera lbw, one run short of the batsman's half century.

Samaraweera almost reluctantly appealed to the television umpire but it was a wasted appeal and removed another weapon from the tourist's armoury as they sought to bat out the day.

With Sri Lanka reduced to 218-6, Siddle took a rest but left-arm quick Starc picked up the baton and had soon removed Prasanna Jayawardene for 21.

A fullish inswinger nearly took the wickekeeper's hand off and the ball flew off his glove to Mike Hussey at second slip to leave just three tailend wickets standing with around 90 minutes of play remaining.

Another peach of a delivery from Starc sent Nuwan Kulasekara back to the pavilion for nine and a perfectly delivered yorker soon afterwards removed Rangana Herath for eight.

With Siddle now bowling from the other end, it was a straight fight between the two for who would take the five wicket haul and win the match for Australia.

Starc took the honours when he had Shaminda Eranga caught behind for six, sparking huge celebrations among his team mates and the disappointingly small crowd of some 2,000.

Siddle was named Man of the Match but was also at the centre of a ball tampering row after a picture of the bowler apparently picking at the seam in Sri Lanka's first innings circulated on social media.

The ICC said match referee Chris Broad had received no official complaints but Sri Lankan team manager Charith Senanayake confirmed he had unofficially expressed his concerns to the former England batsman.
