Mathews backs all-round strength

Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews believes his squad's all-rounders will play a big part in the ICC World Twenty20.The 25-year-old will be required to bowl his seamers as well as contribute in the middle order while other members of the squad can also multi-task.Mathews said: As far as I am concerned, I have a big part to play as an all-rounder. We actually have quite a few all-rounders. Guys like Jeevan Mendis and Tillakaratne Dilshan are all-rounders. It gives more balance to the team and it helps to get the team combination right and we play a big role for the side."Speaking at a press conference in Colombo on Tuesday, Mathews also spoke of the potency of the hosts' bowling attack.

"It is very exciting with our bowling," he added. "I think if you take all the teams, we have the best combination. We have Lasith [Malinga]-who has an unorthodox action-and [Nuwan] Kulasekara and then Ajantha [Mendis] and Akila Dananjaya. Kulasekara is returning to the side after injury and so is Ajantha and that has strengthened our side."

Mathews believes playing on home soil will put his side in a strong position to lift the ICC World T20 for the first time.

He said: "We have the home advantage. We are one of the favourites, but most of the teams are quite even. All the sides have got their best 15 [players] and I think it will be an even contest."

Sri Lanka get the tournament underway against Zimbabwe at Hambantota on September 18.

Mendis eager to return

Mendis eager to return

Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis is looking forward to getting back to international action during the ICC World T20 following a long spell on the sidelines.
A back injury sustained during the tour of South Africa means the slow bowler has not represented his country since January 2012.
The 27-year-old only returned to competitive action last month in the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) but insists he is ready to make a mark on the WT20.

Mendis said: "I was out for about nine months. I did what was required to get well and have trained hard during the last three months. I had a good SLPL and I am well-prepared for the tournament."
The Moratuwa-born cricketer revealed he has needed to undergo a change of bowling action to compensate for his injury problem, a method that he has tried out domestically over the last few weeks.

"I struggled with my off-spin," said Mendis. "Because of injury I had to change the action a lot and now I bowl the off-spin with a bit of a different action. I tried the off-spin during the SLPL and it worked well for me as I got wickets."

Mendis has bequeathed his former position as Sri Lanka's mystery spinner to 18-year-old Akila Dananjaya, who was a surprise inclusion in the WT20 squad after just six professional games - all in the recent SLPL.
The senior man is confident Dananjaya will fare well if called upon.

"I hope he will have a good campaign," said Mendis. "Both of our styles look the same. You don't have to worry when you are led by a guy like Mahela [Jayawardena]. You can bowl without any worry. I think he is in good hands. When Mahela is the captain he gives you attacking field settings and the things that he comes and says to you are very handy. You can bowl without any fear."

Brown interim coach for Kenya

The former Zimbabwe coach, Robin Brown has been temporarily named interim coach of Kenya for the ICC Intercontinental Cup and two one-dayers in Namibia.

The matches against Namibia will be played in Windhoek due to security concerns.

Brown said, " We have a very professional team of players, They just need to put their past problems behind them and we can start seeing the results. We can get back to the top if we can all get together."

"The more cricket we play, the more we will improve. Unfortunately we have not been able to realise this because we have not hosted any visiting teams, as most of the players have been engaged in the East African Cricket League tournament. "
