New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka 2012-13 will begin on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 in Sri Lanka as per cricket schedule announced by Sri Lanka Cricket Board on Friday September 14, 2012. Sri Lanka vs New Zealand 2012 is an international bilateral series to be organized by Sri Lanka.

All-round Sydney Sixers trump Mumbai Indians by 12 runs

Mumbai Indians' disastrous campaign in the Champions League Twenty20 came to an end with their third defeat in four matches as they meekly surrendered to Sydney Sixers by 12 runs at Kingsmead. 

 

Chasing a modest target of 137, Mumbai frittered away a good platform provided by openers Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith as they ended on 124 for eight in their stipulated 20 overs.

 

Tendulkar and Smith added 52 runs for the opening stand in 8.2 overs but the middle order failed miserably as the Big Bash champions clawed their way back into the match.

 

Mumbai Indians gained a lucky entry as the fourth IPL team in this tournament but their entire campaign was a nightmarish one as they failed to perform as a unit in high-pressure situations, thus ending on a winless note.

 

Unlike Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, who played with a no-holds barred approach after being eliminated, the Mumbai Indians could not shrug off the rustiness that was their companion for the entire duration of the tournament.

 

Australia's gen-next pacers, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins along with talented all-rounder Moises Henriques shared bulk of the spoils between them.

 

For Mumbai, Smith top-scored with 28-ball 26 while Tendulkar, who looked well set en route his 22, was once again bowled before he could make it big.

 

Mumbai kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as Rohit Sharma (16), Dinesh Karthik (18), Kieron Pollard (4) and Thisara Perera (2) failed to make any substantial contribution with the bat.

 

Earlier, a disciplined bowling effort by Mumbai helped them restrict Sydney to a modest 136 for seven.

 

Mumbai bowlers stuck to their task with pacers Lasith Malinga and Munaf Patel picking up a couple of wickets each.

 

Barring a few overs at the start, Mumbai bowlers put up a splendid show to stop the Australian side from posting a challenging total.

 

Steven Smith top-scored for Sydney with a run-a-ball 41 and together with Nic Maddinson (27) added 36 runs for the fourth-wicket partnership, which was the only highlight of the innings after the good start given by the openers.

 

Electing to bat, Michael Lumb and Peter Nevill provided Sydney Sixers with a solid start but Munaf's twin strike in the sixth over pegged them back.

 

Malinga struck to give Mumbai first breakthrough having Lumb (28) caught by Smith at deep midwicket. Lumb added 33-run for the opening stand with Nevill. In the next over, Munaf's double strike reduced the Sydney side to 40 for three in 5.3 overs.

 

Munaf first accounted for Nevill, who mistimed a pull shot only to find Thisara Perera at mid-on. Two balls later, Haddin departed without troubling the scorers as he was caught by Ambati Rayudu at cover-point while trying to play a cut shot. Munaf's third over was a double-wicket maiden.

 

Sydney struggled to build any substantial partnership after the departure of their openers as they lost wickets at regular intervals. 

 

Maddinson and Smith tried to revive the innings before the former got run-out by Malinga. Maddinson's 13-ball knock included a couple of boundaries and an equal number of sixes.

 

Skipper Harbhajan Singh piled more misery on Sydney as he scalped Moises Henriques (0) to leave Sydney tottering at 77/5 in 12 overs. 

 

Towards the end, Nathan McCullum scored an unbeaten 12-ball 20 to help his side reach a modest total.

Chennai Super Kings could have won the tournament, says Suresh Raina

Former champions Chennai Super Kings made an early exit from the Champions League Twenty20 but their key batsman Suresh Raina said that his side could have won the tournament but for a few slip-ups.

 

"It's disappointing that we did not qualify for the semifinals. I still feel we could have won this Championship. We had committed some mistakes, but we're going home," Raina said after Chennai beat Yorkshire by four wickets in their last match.

 

Raina captained the side today with regular skipper Mahandra Singh Dhoni playing under him, and asked about this, he said, "MS told me to enjoy the captaincy, it was a good opportunity for me today.

 

"We bowled really well. The ball came on slowly, and it was holding a bit," he said when asked about the Kingsmead pitch.

 

Man-of-the-match, S Badrinath agreed with his captain's assessment of the pitch, saying, "The ball wasn't coming on.

 

So, we decided to take our time, had a couple of partnerships and that's what got us home. Once you take your time, you can play your shots.

 

"We were unlucky in a couple of close games -- 10 runs either side. But we'll come back stronger next year," said Badrinath who top-scored for Chennai with a 38-ball 47 today.

 

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale felt his side were 20 runs short while batting and that cost them the match. 

 

"I thought we were 15-20 runs short. When we started to get some momentum we kept losing wickets, and we were sloppy in the field as well. Loved playing in the Champions League, thanks to the messages we got from our supporters," he said.

Kolkata Knight Riders comprehensively defeat Titans in their last match, by 99 runs

The Titans have looked like a bunch of ordinary cricketers. They would want to forget what has happened today and would want to focus on their next game. KKR on the other hand would want to carry some confidence from this victory. We have seen some incredible individual performances in the match from KKR players and Balaji’s 4-for is one of them.

Kolkata Knight Riders  produced a clinical performance to thrash Titans  by a huge margin of 99 runs in their Champions League T20 2012 match at Cape Town on Sunday.

  

After setting a mammoth target of 189 runs for Titans to win, Lakshmipathy Balaji and company skittled out the local side for 89 in 16.4 overs to register big win. 

 

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir's gritty knock of 44 and some late hitting by Debabrata Das and Manoj Tiwary lifted KKR to 188 for five from their allotted 20 overs.

 

Gambhir scored 44 runs, which came from 36 balls, studded with four boundaries and a six.

 

Brendon McCullum provided Kolkata a rollicking start as the IPL champions raced to 95 runs in the ninth over, before the dismissal of the explosive Kiwis opener.

 

McCullum swatted three sixes and as many boundaries to score 36, which came from 20 balls.

 

But, the tone was set by opening batsman Manvinder Bisla, who cracked two sixes and three boundaries in a bid to provide Kolkata Knight Riders a strong start.

 

Bisla fell to Titans’ bowler Ethy Mbhalati in the fourth over, scoring 27 off 14 balls.

Delhi Daredevils nearly lost game against Perth, admits Mahela Jayawardene

They have inched closer to the semifinals with today's win but Delhi Daredevils skipper Mahela Jayawardene was not too happy with the way his players performed against Perth Scorchers.

 

Chasing a small target of 122, Delhi just about managed a narrow three-wicket win with three balls to spare.

 

Delhi had lost four batsmen at a score of 60 and had Virender Sehwag not scored a half-century and Ajit Agarkar not kept his cool in tight situation, they could have lost the match.

 

"We haven't played for a week. So good to get out and play a good game. We made a few mistakes, which nearly cost us the game. We didn't handle a few situations well. We will have a chat, but our bowlers and fielders did really well," Jayawardene said.

 

Agarkar played a crucial unbeaten cameo of 11 off seven balls to lead the side to finish line and the skipper was all praise for him. "Ajit batted really well, the experience showed," he said.

 

Jayawardene also did not forget to acknowledge the fight back of the Australian side.

 

"All credit to them, they fought really hard," he said.

 

Perth skipper Marcus North said they did not out enough runs on the board but his is happy with the fight.

 

"140 was where we needed to be. Looking at how it panned out, 140 looks like a good score. We had chances to get there, but we lost our way when we lost Shaun and Simon in the middle. Still a lot of pride to play for and get our first win up," he said.

 

Agarkar was adjudged Man of the Match for his all round show. He claimed two wickets for just 14 runs and then played a crucial knock.

 

Agarkar said it helps bowling in company of other fast bowlers in the side.

 

"It's a good thing following them because Irfan, Morkel and Umesh have been bowling really well," he said.

 

The all-rounder said Twenty20 was a tricky format and win was not certain.

 

"Some days it works for you in T20, some days it doesn't. As long as your ideas are right, you can hope for the best. Some times it is nice to get over the line the hard way. Hopefully we will win a few easy ones later," Agarkar said. (PTI)

I am proud of my boys, says MI skipper Harbhajan Singh

Despite suffering a narrow six-run loss to Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians skipper Harbhajan Singh appreciated the efforts of his boys and said he was proud of his team for putting up a fight in their Champions League Twenty20 match here on Sunday.

Chennai were off to a blistering start as they notched up 86 in 8.1 overs initially but Mumbai did well to restrict them to 173-8 in 20 overs from there on.

In reply, Dinesh Karthik notched up a 45-ball 74 to ignite hopes of a successful chase for Mumbai and Harbhajan said he was happy with the performance of his boys.

"We bowled well after the first ten overs. Treat to watch Pollard and Karthik. Great fight shown. A kind of pitch you can hit shots off good length balls. Proud of the boys. Whenever we play CSK it`s always a good game," he said.

His Chennai counterpart, Mahendra Singh Dhoni felt they were around 15 runs short but he praised Ben Hilfenhaus (2/14) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/47) for their effort.

"It was important to guide Jadeja. Matches like these really groom a cricketer. Hilfenhaus was right on the money. We took the gamble of giving the later overs to the spinners. We could have got another 15 runs. 170 plus two runs makes a difference," Dhoni said.

Hilfenhaus, who was awarded the Man of the Match for claiming 2 for 14 in a high-scoring game, said: "After watching the way their seamers finished off the innings it gave us an idea of where to bowl. Variable bounce tonight. It`s quite hard to defend on this ground."
